He retired at Spartaia, naming his villa Desiree, in the memory of the romantic love story between Napoleon and the enchanting daughter of Monsieur Clery, future queen of Sweden. Somewhat later the villa was changed into a hotel, keeping up during all this time the family-like hospitality.
